Probably
the most famous designers and manufacturer
of garden benches is the English company Coalbrookdale.
It took advantage of the new technology in
cast iron and produced some of the finest examples
of garden furniture and ornaments of the 18th Century.
Highly collectable, Coalbrookdale
pieces are characterised by their designs featuring
garden plants. Other major foundries of the
period include the French equivalent of Coalbrookdale,
André (J
P Victor, later Barbezat & Cie)
The renowned architect Sir
Edwin Lutyens was also a garden furniture
designer, possibly inspired by his work with
garden designer and horticulturalist Gertrude
Jekyll. He
designed small runs of pieces like the famous
Lutyens bench to create a very specific effect
in a garden landscape.
