Often
used originally as practical planters, garden
urns in marble and bronze became popular
as garden features and collectors pieces
across Europe.
Louis XVI, the famous
Sun King, used them extensively to decorate
his fabulous gardens at Versailles and wealthy
English and Americans undertaking the Grand
Tour returned with them as souvenirs, capturing
a little of that European style in their own
gardens. With the advent of cast iron for manufacturing,
urns became more affordable and were a key
feature of many 19th century middle class gardens.
