This very rare and extraordinary piece of ecclesiastical art dates back to the medieval period.
With its distorted features, the hand carved grotesque would have been created as a protector of a building.
But the carved stone garloyle also had a practical purpose as a rain water gully, funnelling rain away from a building. You can see this original purpose in the carved channel at the back of this historical artefact.
The early 19thC carved stone pedestal is available separately (Β£3500) and measures:-
Height: 1.02m (40in)
Width: 56cm (22in)
Depth: 56cm (22in)
